The Linksys NSLU2 (a.k.a. SLUG) is a network attached storage device based on the IXP42x processor clocked at 133/266MHz. Is provided with a 2.0A 5V power supply. This electronic board is intended to be connected to a Linksys NSLU2. The NSLU2(also known as 'slug') is an NAS (Network Attached Storage) device. The NSLU2 embeds an unused TTL serial port and an I2C bus it uses to communicate with its RTC(Real Time Clock).
Through the web interface. Open your browser and navigate to the router interface (check default settings below). Under the Administration tab you will find a sub-tab called Factory defaults. On the Factory defaults page click the button labeled Restore Factory Defaults With the reset button. Have your unit powered on. Press and hold the reset button for at least 10 seconds until the power light starts blinking, then release.
When the power light goes solid, unplug the power to the router for 10 seconds. Plug the power back in and start the router.
When the power light goes solid again the router is ready to use. The 30-30-30 reset If the above instructions don't work you can always try the 30-30-30 reset as follows:. When router is powered on, press the reset button and hold for 30 seconds.
(Use a paper clip or something sharp). While holding the reset button pressed, unplug the power of the router and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.
While still holding the reset button down, turn on the power to the unit again and hold for another 30 seconds. This process usually works for resetting any router to it's factory setting. If that doesn't work be sure to check out the incase someone else has had similar problems resetting their router. Note: It is worth reading more about and what the risks and considerations are when resetting your router this way, instead of just rebooting it. NSLU2 Firmwares Staying up to date with the latest firmware is a good idea to keep your router even more secure from various security flaws. If you want to squeeze a little bit of extra functionality out of your router, consider flashing an open-source firmware like dd-wrt, openWRT or LEDE. Or you can set everything up manually. Once it is configured the USB 2.0 and Fast Ethernet interfaces will keep the data flowing fast and free. Turns Your USB Drive into NAS The Linksys NSLU2 connects up to two USB storage devices to your 10/100M Ethernet network for convenient file sharing.
Built-in Disk Utilities The Linksys NSLU2 features built-in browser-based disk utilities for format, scandisk and backup applications so that management of your network storage is easier than ever. Password Protection With password protection, the Linksys NSLU2 provides managed access to connected storage devices via user name or group for enhanced security. Pros: I got this unit to run as a backup NAS drive and it is perfectly suitable for this purpose, especially since I keep it running 24x7 (it uses very little power). I have this currently attached to a 320GB WD drive (in a Rosewill RX353-S enclosure) and have been using it for a few days now. The speed is more than sufficient for my use - especially since the backups are run at night.
Note that the drive is formatted as EXT3 - this gives the best performance compared to others. Also, I find that there are a few 'windows drivers' available that can read EXT3 drives - which is great in case the NLSU2 fails, I will still have access to the files from Windows. (much better than NAS drives based on ReiserFS - did not any good Windows drivers for those).(There is always the LiveCD approach to recovery in any case). Cons: Unit is shipped under clocked and as others have mentioned - th e firmware has not been updated for years. The current setup is configured with firmware release 2.3 R63. (unofficial release is R76 but not easily available since it is unofficial).
Other Thoughts: Power Consumption (based on actual measurements using P3): NLSU2 + 320GB Drive = 13W (or 9.522kWh monthly), about $1.58 per month in electricity. A barebones AMD Sempron file server = 76W (or 55.384kWh monthly), about $9.20 per month in electricity costs. Transfer Speed: I did a simple test transfering a 4571MB iso file and recorded the time it took (all within the same local 100Mbs network). 1) PC to another PC - 8 mins (34.38GB/hr) 2) PC to a laptop via wireless-G - 34 mins (8.84GB/hr) 3) PC to NLSU2 - 20 mins (13.7GB/hr) 4) PC to.turbo. NLSU2 - 17 mins (16.13GB/hr) Note.turbo.
in (4) indicates the results after I modified the hardware (removed resistor) to increase clock speed (voids warrantee). Also after I increased the clock speed, I noticed that the web browser interface loads much faster.
I bought this from another site (been Out of Stock at NewEgg for a while) so this review is similar to review I made at the original site. Pros: I've heard that most folks who use the unmodified unit can get it to work reliably with 'modest-sized' (.
Easy to set up, convenient to use. Without modification, it does exactly what it is supposed to. Allows backing up one attached hard drive to the other - not as good as RAID mirroring, but still decent redundancy.
Reliable, uses very little power. Cons: Cut power to it for very long, and it loses its settings requiring you to set it up all over again. Very slow reads from attached hard drives. Writes are faster. Other Thoughts: I know many people who have their lives on a desktop or laptop hardrive. They are one crash or one theft away from losing it all. They don't get backups, and they will regret it.
I've backed up data to floppies, until it became too cumbersome, then to Zip drives, until I started experiencing the infamous 'click of death'. I moved on to tape backups, but never really liked them. Finally, a backup system that works, works, works. I use an NSLU2 attached to my home network. There are two Seagate 320GB drives attached to the NSLU2, but only one is available for backup.
The second one is used to backup the first one. Not as good as RAID, but I have very little money in the setup, and it uses a lot less electricity than an actual server would - something that is becoming increasingly important.
It is so much better than any backup from the past - not only can backup everything to it, but it is always available via my local network when I'm at home, or via VPN when I'm. The following guidelines apply to all product categories unless otherwise indicated within specific categories.
